A new approach to education might put an end to the “Rude American”
stereotype for good, writes Jonathan Montgomery on the Huffington
Post. Called “Cultural Intelligence” or CQ, it is defined by the Cultural
Intelligence Center as a person’s capability to function effectively in situations
characterized by cultural diversity.
Although CQ has not yet gained a wide acceptance in the U.S., it is already
being integrated into school systems in some countries. According to David
Livermore, Ph.D., author of “Leading with Cultural Intelligence,” both
Singapore and Finland are already working on ways to to make sure their
students are “globally conscious and culturally agile.” Finland’s Minister of
Education called the concept “a no-brainer.”
Although preparing students to successfully navigate a culturally diverse
environment is now more important than ever, the concept behind CQ is not
entirely new. People to People Student Ambassadors Program, whose goal is
to promote understanding, has been offering student programs for the last 50
years. Many schools and colleges have been running study abroad programs
and student exchange opportunities.
According to the MetLife/Harris Survey of the American Teacher, nearly two in
ten teachers believe CQ is an essential factor in post-graduation success. With
businesses now regularly operating in multiple cultural environments, they
want employees who can adapt quickly to different cultural norms. “It’s not
enough to know an employee has been abroad,” says Livermore,
“Some CEOs aren’t even going to look at someone in management who
doesn’t have this capability.”
