Study: British Math Teachers Some of the Worst in the World

Kate Loveys explains why British math teachers fall short when
compared to teachers in other countries.

Britain’s Daily Mail reports that a study that followed 200
math teacher trainees from all over the world has found England’s teachers
rate second lowest in qualification and and knowledge of their subject among
the 9 nations represented. Czech Republic ranked last.

The researchers from Plymouth University’s Center for Better Teaching,

who authored the report, compared educational background of teacher-
candidates and tested them on their math expertise. An example of a
question given was “What is the value of 2^5 (or two to the power of five)”.
The answer is 32.

An elementary school teacher in England requires only a C in Math GCSE to
be qualified to teach, while secondary school teachers must have a degree
in a math-related discipline. According to the article in the Daily Mail, most
elementary school math teachers in Japan have a degree in mathematics.

The results of the study are not surprising, in light of the recently released
OECD paper:

Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development found England had
tumbled from eighth place in 2000, to 28th place last year in international
league tables for maths.

The conclusions drawn by the Plymouth researchers point to improved
training as the way forward. Raising the requirement for primary school
teachers to at least a B in GCSE and making maths degrees and continuing
career training a requirement for those wishing to teach at the secondary
level are the necessary first steps. Tony McAleavy of the Plymouth Center
says:

‘Teaching needs to become a respected profession in this country, on a par
with the law and medicine, and then we will attract more able people.’
